First to cry out in horror, and then to bravely enter as a peacemaker, the violent places in Torah, the “harsh passages,” offer an opportunity in which to engage with human violence as one of the discomforting facets of life. Seeking wholeness, we will approach the violent passages as offering a controlled setting in which to consider strategies by which to challenge and transcend violence in text and in life, in our own lives, and in the world around us. As much as we may wish they weren’t there, by being able to confront and wrestle with the harsh passages and to receive the whole Torah, we learn to engage with the fullness of life, to soften its harshness, and to help create the world as envisioned at the beginning.
