Nathan the Wise is a play by G.E. Lessing, an 18th-century German writer, philosopher, and dramatist, influenced by Spinoza. Produced in 1779, the play is set in Jerusalem during the Third Crusade. It portrays the wise Jewish merchant Nathan (a character modeled on Lessing’s friend, Moses Mendelssohn), engaged in conversation with the Islamic Sultan Saladin and a Christian Knight Templar. Our discussion will focus on the intriguing “Ring Parable” at the heart of the play, which Nathan offers in response to Saladin’s question, Which is the true religion?
